Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has highlighted the potential of India-Germany cooperation to strengthen research, innovation, and manufacturing.
Speaking at the Berlin Global Dialogue, he said the EU trade deal could create new opportunities for bilateral business ties, particularly in research and development (R&D).
Goyal called for greater collaboration between German technology companies and Indian manufacturers. He said the partnership could combine Germany’s precision engineering with India’s skilled workforce and cost-effective manufacturing capabilities. The goal is to develop products jointly in India and serve markets across the world.
Goyal said stronger research cooperation could help businesses from both countries co-develop, co-design, and co-create new products. He also highlighted the role of India’s growing network of free trade agreements in expanding access to international markets.
According to the minister, India’s trade agreements already cover two-thirds of global markets. He expects this reach to expand to 75 percent of global GDP over the next 12 to 18 months.
Inviting German businesses to explore these opportunities, Goyal said the combination of German engineering expertise and India’s affordable manufacturing capabilities could help companies serve global customers.
These opportunities reflect the potential for closer industrial cooperation between the two countries, with research and manufacturing serving as important areas for collaboration.

During his Berlin visit, Goyal met German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Katherina Reiche to discuss bilateral trade, investment, and industrial cooperation. According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, both ministers explored how the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) could strengthen economic ties between India and Germany.
The EU trade deal featured prominently in discussions about creating new business opportunities. The ministers also explored ways to deepen industrial collaboration and turn the agreement’s potential into tangible trade and investment outcomes.
Goyal also co-chaired an India-Germany Business Roundtable organized with the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) and the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA). The event brought together German CEOs and business representatives to discuss opportunities for cooperation.
The roundtable focused on translating the proposed trade agreement into practical business and investment opportunities. The two ministers also jointly inaugurated the India Centre at DGAP in Berlin to promote policy research and dialogue on India-Germany relations.
Goyal’s visit is part of India’s broader effort to strengthen its economic partnership with Germany. The minister is accompanied by a delegation of around 100 Indian businesses and startups during his visit to Germany and the Netherlands.
The discussions underline how the EU trade deal could support stronger India-Germany ties through research, technology, investment, and manufacturing. For businesses in both countries, deeper cooperation could create opportunities to develop products jointly and expand their global reach.
