The demand for data centers in India is increasing at a large rate, and is caused by the rapid increase in the consumption of data associated with the digitalization of services and the creation of smart cities.
Although these cities have reached the stage of their execution, they are producing enormous volumes of new data, which is stimulating the development of improved data infrastructure even further.
Nirupa Chander, Senior Vice President of the Secure Power, Data Centers, and Power Systems of Schneider Electric, pointed out that the Indian data center demand is going to keep rising in the coming years. “With the accelerating pace of digitalization across various sectors, data storage and processing capacities are becoming crucial to meeting the growing data demands,” she said.

This growth in the digital infrastructure is necessary as India is incorporating new technologies and services in the economy. As of now, the data centers, even those supporting artificial intelligence (AI) applications, consume approximately two percent of the total global power. This figure is, however, likely to increase to four percent as the number of such centers increases twofold across the world.
Chander also assured that the increased energy consumption will not be a big percentage of the entire global energy consumption, in spite of the growth. “The expansion of data centers will remain a small fraction of global energy use, ensuring sustainable growth in this sector,” she added.
With the advent of digitalization and smart cities in India, the data center industry in the nation will grow significantly. This is because, as the use of data in delivering services grows, there is a great need to have an enhanced and powerful data infrastructure, which will facilitate the development of technological advancements and urban growth in the future.
