In India, a legislative committee has put out broad new regulations that may require content producers of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated material to seek licenses and properly label their creations. The suggestions are meant to address the rise in AI-powered fake news, which politicians worry could deceive the public and disturb the peace.
Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla has received the draft report from the Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, which is led by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey. The paper emphasizes that in order to develop legal and technological frameworks for detecting and punishing those who misuse artificial intelligence, cooperation across ministries like Information and Broadcasting and Electronics and Information Technology will be essential.
The panel argued that requiring AI-generated photos, videos, and articles to be labeled would make it easier for viewers to discern between real and fake content. Additionally, accountability would be introduced by the proposed licensing framework, guaranteeing that creators would be held accountable in the event that their work causes harm.

The committee recommended that media companies implement more robust internal controls in addition to regulating creators. This entails putting in place stringent fact-checking procedures and designating ombudsmen who are charged with maintaining reporting standards of accuracy and quality. According to the research, such actions will be necessary to preserve public confidence in a time when falsified news can spread quickly.
By establishing a specialized panel to investigate deepfake-related issues, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has already taken action in this regard. The government's increasing concern on AI-driven disinformation is demonstrated by the two significant initiatives that are presently under way to create detection systems that can recognize deepfake videos and flag fake speech.
