Thousands of farmers in Maharashtra are set to gain reliable, low-cost irrigation as a Rs 162 crore solar irrigation contract rolls out across the state.
The initiative will provide solar-powered pumps, helping farmers move away from diesel and erratic electricity supply while ensuring steady daytime water access for crops.
The project will see the deployment of nearly 6,900 solar water pumping systems with capacities of 3 HP, 5 HP, and 7.5 HP.
The full scope covers design, manufacturing, installation, testing, and commissioning, with execution expected to be completed within one year. This scale of rollout is aimed at improving irrigation access across rural areas where power supply remains a challenge.

Backed by a Rs 162 crore solar irrigation contract, the project is expected to directly benefit more than 6,800 farmers. With solar-powered systems in place, farmers can significantly cut fuel expenses and reduce dependence on grid electricity, leading to more predictable farming cycles and better productivity.
The contract has been awarded to Oswal Pumps Limited by Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited under the PM-KUSUM program, specifically aligned with the state’s Magel Tyala Saur Krushi Pump initiative. The scheme focuses on expanding solar adoption in agriculture and improving energy access for farmers.
"We are proud to be a meaningful contributor to the Government of India's vision of energy self-sufficiency in the agricultural sector, and we remain committed to delivering this project with the highest standards of quality, timeliness, and farmer-centric service," said Vivek Gupta, CMD, Oswal Pumps.
This development reflects a broader shift in Indian agriculture toward clean energy solutions. As states push for sustainable farming, large-scale solar irrigation projects are becoming central to reducing costs, cutting emissions, and strengthening rural resilience.
