India is pushing ahead with a major education and industry link-up through Space Startup Ecosystem development, with new space laboratories in universities and colleges set to train future space professionals.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh reviewed the plan on Sunday, which proposes setting up seven labs in the first phase. These labs will focus on hands-on training in satellite systems, rocketry, and mission design.
The review came after a detailed presentation by Pawan Goenka on reforms led by IN-SPACe. The reforms have opened India’s space sector to private players, helping drive strong growth in the Space Startup Ecosystem and attracting more than USD 600 million in private investment over the last five years.

The number of space startups has surged sharply, rising from single digits in 2019 to over 400 by early 2026. These startups now operate across launch vehicle development, satellite manufacturing, payload systems, ground infrastructure, and data-driven space services. The planned space laboratories in universities are expected to deepen practical learning and directly support this expanding ecosystem.
To support the sector, the government is rolling out a Rs 1,000 crore venture capital fund in partnership with Small Industries Development Bank of India. A Rs 500 crore Technology Adoption Fund is also being implemented to help startups move from early-stage innovation to commercial products. In addition, seed funding of up to Rs 1 crore is available for prototype-stage ventures.
Skill development is also being scaled up, with 17 training programs completed and around 900 participants certified in areas such as satellite manufacturing, launch systems, and space cybersecurity.
India’s global footprint is also expanding, with partnerships across 45 countries, including recent collaborations with Singapore and the UAE. These efforts are further strengthening the Space Startup Ecosystem, while opening access to international markets for Indian startups and institutions.
