To improve the steel industry in India, SAIL has joined forces with ABB India to bring the latest digital solutions to the Rourkela Steel Plant in Odisha. Facing higher costs, stronger environmental rules and more demand, which could reach 10% in FY25, this collaboration shows that the industry is aiming to improve manufacturing practices using data.
The aim of SAIL is to increase the plant’s capacity from 4.2 to 9 million tons a year by 2030. ABB’s strengths in automation and data modeling will be used in partnership to make digital twins and advanced models for blast furnaces and basic oxygen furnaces. Using these new developments is expected to enhance ironmaking and steelmaking, lower energy consumption, increase furnace efficiency and prolong equipment life.
Key highlights:
“In FY 2024-25, Rourkela Steel Plant recorded production of 4.08 million tons of saleable steel.” Digital twin systems are now being used to provide real-time insights into plant operations, help maintain equipment early and support better decisions by plant staff.
