Oil India Ltd has sharply increased production from its Rajasthan fields, with Rajasthan crude production emerging as a key milestone in India’s push for energy security.
The state-run firm reported a record 1,202 barrels per day from the Jodhpur sandstone formation in the Thar desert, up nearly 70 percent from last year’s 705 barrels per day.
This surge highlights how Oil India boosts Rajasthan crude production through advanced extraction methods and improved field operations.
The crude produced at the Baghewala field in Jaisalmer is transported by tankers to Oil and Natural Gas Corporation facilities in Mehsana, Gujarat, and then sent via pipeline to the Koyali refinery operated by Indian Oil Corporation.

In FY 2025-26, Oil India’s Rajasthan operations delivered 43,773 metric tonnes of crude oil, up from 32,787 metric tonnes the previous year. Officials credit the growth to advanced recovery techniques, especially Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS), which is used to extract high-viscosity crude.
"This is a significant achievement, especially considering the challenging geological conditions of the Thar region. It underlines the potential of unconventional resources in contributing to India's energy needs," an official said.
The Baghewala field, spread over 200.26 sq km, has 52 wells, with 33 currently operational. Oil India completed CSS operations in 19 wells and drilled 13 new wells this year. It also deployed new technologies like fishbone drilling, barefoot completion, and electric downhole heaters to improve efficiency.
Producing heavy crude since 2017, Oil India’s continued innovation in Rajasthan is expected to reduce import dependence and strengthen India’s long-term energy resilience.
