NLC India Ltd (NLCIL), a major player in the energy transition, has won its first major project as a standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in a strategic breakthrough in the renewable energy landscape in India. NLC India Renewables Ltd, the renewable power arm of the company was awarded the Letter of Award (LoA) by Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Ltd (TNGECL) to establish three large-scale BESS projects in the aggregate capacity of 250 MW/500 MWh. These systems are built to perform two complete charge-discharge cycles each day, which allows delivering the power in a flexible and steady way.
The project would be based on a build-own-operate (BOO) project and it will also be accompanied by viability gap funding. This was done on a competitive basis, which indicates the increasing NLC India in the sustainable infrastructure.
“This marks NLC India Ltd’s (NLCIL Group) first major venture into standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects,” the company stated in its regulatory filing with BSE.
This comes at a time when NLC India announced consolidated net profit of 468.46 crore in Q4 FY25, which is more than four times compared to the same period of previous year. NLC India, a Navratna PSU in the Ministry of Coal, has currently turned to solar, wind and now battery storage to reflect clean energy ambitions at the national level. The emphasis on green expansion of the company affirms the fact that the company aims to provide credible and environmentally friendly energy solutions.
