Indian Railways Eyes AI-Powered Cameras for Smarter Security

Indian Railways is preparing to overhaul its surveillance network by shifting focus to AI-powered cameras, while putting fresh orders for conventional CCTV systems on hold.

The move comes as the railway ministry works on new procurement standards that will prioritize smarter monitoring systems across stations and trains.

According to a report, railway officials are drafting updated guidelines for future surveillance infrastructure. Until those rules are finalized, new purchases of standard CCTV cameras have reportedly been paused. The aim is to introduce systems that can do more than simply record footage.

The upcoming AI-powered cameras are expected to help railway authorities detect suspicious activity, monitor crowd movement, identify unattended baggage, and improve passenger safety in real time. Officials believe the technology can reduce the need for constant manual monitoring and allow quicker responses during emergencies or security threats.

Officials are now focusing on creating technical standards that will support long-term deployment of AI-based monitoring tools across the railway network.

While the temporary pause in fresh CCTV orders may slow some ongoing procurement plans, the ministry sees the shift toward AI cameras as a long-term investment aimed at improving railway security, operational efficiency, and passenger management across the country.
