Hindustan Zinc Limited has achieved a key milestone as its Chanderiya smelter becomes the first facility in the country to secure the globally recognized Zinc Mark certification.
With this, the Chanderiya smelter stands out as India’s first site to meet international benchmarks for responsible zinc production.
The Zinc Mark is issued under the Copper Mark framework, a global assurance system that evaluates environmental, social, and governance practices across metal production units.
The certification process includes an independent assessment of operations, covering areas such as environmental impact, workplace safety, ethical business conduct, and community engagement.

Located in Rajasthan, the Chanderiya complex is one of the largest integrated zinc-lead smelting facilities in the world. Its certification signals a growing shift within India’s metals sector toward aligning with global sustainability standards, especially as international buyers increasingly demand responsibly sourced materials.
The company said the recognition reflects its continued focus on sustainable operations while maintaining production scale. It also strengthens its position in global markets, where ESG compliance is becoming a critical factor for partnerships and investment decisions.
Industry observers note that this development could set a precedent for other domestic producers. As expectations around transparency and responsible sourcing rise, the Chanderiya smelter may serve as a benchmark for similar facilities aiming to achieve global certifications.
The milestone highlights a broader transition in the metals industry, where success is increasingly linked not just to output, but to how responsibly that output is produced.
