Electric vehicle development is increasingly moving beyond the question of motor performance. As OEMs introduce multiple vehicle platforms, suppliers must address varying power requirements, voltage architectures, electronics, software and system integration while delivering products that can be localized and scaled competitively.
This is creating space for engineering-led component companies that can contribute across the development cycle rather than operate only as part suppliers.
SEG Automotive is responding to this shift by extending its established expertise in rotating electrical machines into a broader electrification portfolio. Its e-mobility solutions now span 250W to 300kW and 48V to 800V, enabling the company to address applications ranging from light electric mobility to higher-power vehicle platforms.
Having initially built significant capabilities in electric two- and three-wheelers, the company has expanded into electric light commercial vehicles while strengthening the engineering foundation required to pursue passenger and commercial vehicle applications.
Extending a Century of Electrical Engineering into EVs
SEG Automotive’s strength in electrification is anchored in more than 100 years of experience in rotating electrical machines. That legacy is now being translated into an integrated technology proposition covering motors, power electronics, software, controls, system engineering, simulation and validation.
The transition is visible in the company's expanding application range. Its move into higher-voltage systems, alongside its existing presence in two- and three-wheelers, allows SEG Automotive to participate across multiple stages of the electric mobility market.
Rather than developing isolated products for individual vehicle categories, it is building scalable platforms that can be adapted to different customer requirements.
More than 0.5 million motors operating in the field provide an important application base as the company broadens this portfolio. Its Indian operations also serve as a global competence centre for light electro-mobility engineering, supporting both local and international programmes.
This combination of field experience, engineering capability and application breadth enables SEG Automotive to engage with OEMs as a technology and development partner rather than solely as a component supplier.
A Glocal Model for Faster Engineering Response
Driving SEG Automotive India’s transformation is Anil Kumar, President & Managing Director, India, whose career with the Bosch Group began in 1990 as a trainee. Over the years, he has held senior responsibilities across technical, manufacturing, sales and marketing functions in India and Germany, including leadership roles within the Starter Motors and Generators business.
His experience in taking a traditional electrical-machines business towards a more growth-oriented model has shaped an approach at SEG Automotive that places customer understanding, technical competence and organizational agility at its centre.
The company engages with customers not only around present product requirements but also their future technology roadmaps. This helps its engineering teams develop solutions that can evolve with vehicle platforms. Equally important is SEG Automotive’s “Glocal” approach, which combines global engineering expertise with an understanding of Indian market conditions and customer needs.
"In a market where vehicle technology cycles are becoming shorter, the company is also emphasizing cross-functional collaboration and faster decision-making. The objective is to reduce the time between identifying an opportunity and developing a commercially viable solution”, speaks Anil Kumar, President & Managing Director.
Engineering for Scalable and Sustainable Performance
SEG Automotive is strengthening this proposition through investment in R&D, simulation and validation. Its engineering teams work across advanced motor technologies, power electronics, software integration and system engineering, supported by testing capabilities that allow solutions to be evaluated before deployment.
Increasing use of virtual development and simulation-based engineering is helping the company reduce development iterations, improve reliability and shorten time-to-market. This becomes particularly valuable when platforms need to be adapted across power levels or vehicle applications.
Another area of focus is modularity. SEG Automotive is developing scalable platforms, including magnet-less motor systems, giving customers greater flexibility while addressing longer-term considerations around materials and sustainability. The company is approaching sustainability at the manufacturing level as well, through increased localization, improved production efficiency, optimized resource utilization and more resilient supply chains. SEG Automotive’s strength in electrification is anchored in more than 100 years of experience in rotating electrical machines
“For SEG Automotive, these efforts are interconnected. A competitive EV component solution must deliver technical performance while also meeting increasingly important requirements around cost, availability, localization and manufacturability”, shares Anil Kumar.
Taking Indian Engineering to the Next Stage
SEG Automotive’s next phase is centred on expanding its electrification footprint across electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers and light commercial vehicles, while progressively entering higher-voltage applications for passenger and commercial vehicles. Its existing 48V–800V capability provides the technical base for this expansion.
The company is also deepening engagement with OEMs, technology partners, system integrators and engineering partners as vehicle architectures become more integrated. Its ambition is to participate in complete electrification solutions spanning motors, electronics, software and integrated e-drive systems.
India is expected to play a larger role in this strategy, both as a domestic market and as an engineering and export hub. SEG Automotive India already supports customers across Africa, ASEAN, Japan and the US, linking local capabilities with the company’s global technology network. By combining its century-long electrical engineering heritage with scalable technologies, local engineering strength and global reach, the company is building towards its stated vision: “We are the Motor for the Mobility of Today and Tomorrow.”
