Stainless Steel could become India's biggest growth story by 2047. As Industry leaders believe Stainless Steel will play a key role in helping India achieve the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision by strengthening manufacturing, improving infrastructure, and supporting clean energy projects.
They have urged the government to introduce a national strategy that promotes wider use of stainless steel while encouraging investments, innovation, and capacity expansion.
India is already the world's second-largest consumer of stainless steel, producing around 5.16 million tonnes annually. However, industry experts say the country still has significant room to grow.
They believe increasing domestic consumption and expanding value-added production can help India become a global manufacturing hub over the next two decades.
The call was made by industry leaders during discussions involving the Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA) and the Global Stainless Steel Expo. They stressed that closer coordination between the government and industry will be necessary to unlock the sector's full potential.
One of the biggest goals is to increase India's per capita stainless steel consumption from the current 3.4 kg to nearly the global average of 6 kg. According to industry representatives, higher consumption would not only boost manufacturing but also improve the quality and lifespan of public infrastructure.
The industry is seeking support in several areas, including:

The use of Stainless Steel is no longer limited to construction and transportation. Demand is growing rapidly across sectors that are expected to drive India's economic growth over the coming decades.
These include:
Industry leaders say stainless steel's corrosion resistance, durability, and recyclability make it a preferred material for these industries. While the initial cost may be higher than conventional materials, its lower maintenance needs and longer service life reduce overall lifecycle costs.
Abhyuday Jindal said India is at a defining stage in its industrial journey. He believes continuous investments in capacity expansion, technology upgrades, and value-added products can help position India as a leading global manufacturing destination for Stainless Steel.
Rajam Krishnamurti also emphasized the need to spread awareness about lifecycle costing and corrosion management. According to him, wider adoption of stainless steel in infrastructure and industrial projects can improve sustainability while making Indian manufacturing globally competitive.
With global production standing at around 64.2 million tonnes, industry leaders believe India has the opportunity to increase its share by focusing on innovation, quality, and domestic demand.
As India works toward the Viksit Bharat 2047 goal, the Stainless Steel industry is positioning itself as a critical partner in the country's long-term manufacturing and infrastructure growth. If policy support, investment, and industry collaboration move together, stainless steel could become one of the strongest pillars of India's economic transformation.
