Apollo Micro has secured a Make-II Prototype Sanction Order from the Indian Navy, marking a major step into autonomous maritime warfare.
Apollo Micro will develop the SAVIOR-ASW, an unmanned semi-submersible vessel for underwater surveillance and anti-submarine operations.
The project supports India's push for indigenous defense technology under the Defense Acquisition Procedure (DAP).
The Hyderabad-based defense electronics company called the order one of its biggest indigenous technology milestones. The Make-II framework also gives confidence to developers. Under the program, the Indian Navy plans to procure successful prototypes after development.
The Make-II Prototype Sanction Order allows Apollo Micro to build an indigenous prototype for the Navy. The company will develop the SAVIOR-ASW platform, short for Semi-Submersible Autonomous Vessel for Intelligence, Operations and Reconnaissance.
The vessel is designed for anti-submarine warfare surveillance. It can operate below the sea surface for long periods without human intervention.
The autonomous platform will use hydrophone arrays to detect submarines and underwater threats. It will transmit intelligence directly to naval command centers in real time.
The company believes the platform will improve India's underwater monitoring capabilities. It will also reduce dependence on conventional anti-submarine warships for routine surveillance.
According to Apollo Micro, the autonomous vessel offers a cost advantage. It requires lower acquisition and operating costs than traditional ASW warships.
The company said multiple vessels can work together during missions. This will increase underwater surveillance coverage across large maritime areas.
The approach also allows frontline naval ships to focus on combat and operational duties. Autonomous systems can handle continuous monitoring tasks independently.

The project comes as submarine activity continues to rise in the Indian Ocean Region. The region remains strategically important for India's security and global trade.
Around 95 percent of India's trade by volume moves through sea routes in this region. The Indian Ocean Region also handles nearly 30 percent of global containerized cargo.
In addition, about 42 percent of the world's crude oil trade passes through these waters. Strong underwater surveillance has become increasingly important for protecting these critical sea lanes.
