In a significant boost to India’s aerospace sector, Airbus Helicopters and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) have announced the establishment of India’s first privately-led helicopter manufacturing facility in Kolar, Karnataka. The Final Assembly Line (FAL) will produce Airbus’ best-selling H125 single-engine helicopter, catering to both Indian and regional markets. This landmark initiative, aligned with the ‘Make in India’ campaign, marks a pivotal step toward self-reliance in aerospace manufacturing.
The factory, nestled in Kolar’s Vemgal Industrial Area, just a two-hour drive from Bengaluru is set to kick off production in 2026. To start, it’ll roll out 10 H125 helicopters a year, but there’s big potential for more. Airbus sees a demand for 500 light helicopters in India and South Asia over the next 20 years. Kolar won out over Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur thanks to its awesome local industries, talented workforce, and great transport links. TASL grabbed 740,000 square feet for the site, which will also handle helicopter upkeep and repairs.
Key Highlights:
The H125 is a rugged, single-engine chopper that thrives in tough spots like high mountains or wild weather. It’s a jack-of-all-trades, perfect for medical rescues, police missions, tourist adventures, or aerial jobs. Plus, it’s the only helicopter to have touched down on Mount Everest! At the Kolar plant, workers will put together major parts, wire up cutting-edge tech, and run tests to meet top-notch global safety standards.
Karnataka’s welcoming policies, like tax breaks and incentives, helped land this project. Folks like Aequs CEO Aravind Melligeri are pumped, saying it’ll create skilled jobs and give the local economy a big lift. This isn’t the first time Tata and Airbus have teamed up—they’re already working on a C295 aircraft factory in Vadodara, Gujarat.

Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia says this plant will help link up remote areas through the UDAN scheme, sparking tourism and growth. Come 2026, the first ‘Made in India’ H125s will take flight, making it a proud moment for India’s aviation dreams.
