The domestic stainless steel industry has filed a petition with the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) to consider anti-dumping duties on cheap imports, which are hitting local players, Jindal Stainless managing director Abhyuday Jindal has said. The Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA), on behalf of the industry, has filed the application to carry out an investigation into the dumping of stainless steel items in the domestic market from a selected group of countries.
The industry is now awaiting the DGTR to start its investigation," Jindal said. The DGTR is the apex authority to implement and administer all trade remedial measures, including antidumping, countervailing duties and safeguard measures under the Ministry of Commerce. Jindal said that the application was filed around the end of June. "DGTR also takes two to three months to start an investigation," he added.

When asked whether there is a need for a duty immediately in view of global uncertainty in the context of U.S. tariffs, Jindal said, Certainly, because for a number of years we have suffered from substandard dumped material from countries like China, Vietnam, Indonesia, and now faced with these absolutely trade uncertainities on a global scale, it is absolutely needed to protect our borders and our homegrown companies. "Situation is urgent because this is where the growth is coming. India is where the market is growing," he said. According to market research firm BigMint, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, and South Korea were the main suppliers of India's 1.73 million tons of stainless steel imports in FY25.
