Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is front and center once again as India's Ministry of Defense locked in two major contracts totaling INR 5,083 crore on March 3, 2026.
These fresh signings, finalized at South Block in New Delhi with Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh present, deliver a direct boost to the Indian Coast Guard's patrol power and the Indian Navy's layered air Defense . Coming amid growing focus on protecting vast sea lanes and offshore assets, the moves blend homegrown tech with trusted international partnerships to keep India's maritime edge sharp.
The bigger slice goes to HAL in Bengaluru: a 2,901 crore pact under the Buy (Indian – Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) route for six Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Mk-III in Maritime Role configuration. These twin-engine workhorses come loaded with top-tier avionics and mission systems, ready to launch from shore or ship decks.
They'll tackle coastal surveillance, search and rescue, disaster relief, protection of offshore installations and artificial islands, safeguarding fishermen, and monitoring the marine environment. The package includes operational gear, engineering support, and performance-based logistics to keep them flying reliably.

Sukaran Singh, CEO & MD — Tata Advanced Systems (Tata Group Defense), on growing India’s defense industrial footprint and exports said, “Pretty much every country wants to diversify away from their current set of suppliers…” “We are in deep discussions… India is opening up defense production to the private sector.”
This isn't just about hardware—it's a jobs and industry win too. The project pulls in over 200 MSMEs across the supply chain and is set to create around 65 lakh man-hours of employment, giving a real push to India's self-reliance drive in aerospace.
On the Navy side, the INR 2,182 crore deal with Russia's JSC Rosoboron export brings in Surface-to-Air Vertical Launch (VL-Shtil) missile systems, plus missile holding frames. These provide fast, all-weather defense against aircraft, helicopters, drones, anti-ship missiles, and other aerial threats, stacking extra protection on frontline warships for better survival in high-threat zones. The contract strengthens the long-standing India-Russia Defense tie built on mutual trust.
Dr. D.K. Sunil, Chairman & Managing Director of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), said, “Every single product is homegrown… We are committed to delivering high-quality platforms that support India’s defense preparedness and enhance self-reliance.”
Key stats from the deals and systems:
These INR 5,083 crore defense contracts fit right into India's strategy of modernizing naval and coastal forces while ramping up indigenous production. For the Coast Guard, the new choppers expand reach across exclusive economic zones and speed up responses to cyclones or emergencies. For the Navy, the Shtil upgrade bolsters multi-layered shields, helping carriers and destroyers handle saturation attacks in contested waters.
Announced just days ago, these pacts show steady momentum toward a stronger, more self-reliant maritime posture. As assets roll out, they'll play a key role in securing India's blue-water interests.
