India has launched a global bidding process to establish rare earth magnet manufacturing units in the country, marking a significant step toward strengthening domestic manufacturing in India in a critical industrial sector. The move is aimed at reducing dependence on imports and building a reliable rare earth supply chain for materials that are essential to modern technologies.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries has invited proposals for setting up integrated manufacturing plants for rare earth permanent magnets, particularly Neodymium-Iron-Boron magnets. These magnets are widely used in electric vehicle components, wind turbines, electronics, defence equipment, and several advanced manufacturing applications.
Through this initiative, the government plans to create a combined production capacity of around 6,000 metric tonnes annually. India currently relies heavily on imports for rare earth magnets, with global supply largely controlled by a few countries. By encouraging critical mineral manufacturing, the government hopes to improve supply security and support the country’s growing clean energy and mobility sectors.

To attract investment, the government is offering strong financial support. The scheme includes capital subsidies worth ₹750 crore along with sales-linked incentives amounting to ₹6,450 crore. These incentives are designed to encourage companies to establish advanced facilities and invest in high-tech manufacturing in India.
Under the bidding process, selected companies may receive manufacturing allocations ranging from 600 to 1,200 metric tonnes per year. Up to five companies are expected to be chosen through a competitive evaluation process conducted on the Central Public Procurement Portal. The selection will involve both technical and financial assessments to ensure capable and cost-effective participation.
Rare earth magnets play a crucial role in energy-efficient technologies due to their strong magnetic performance. They are key components in electric motors, renewable energy technology, aerospace equipment, and precision engineering products. As demand for these technologies continues to rise globally, securing access to critical raw materials has become increasingly important for many countries.
India’s decision to invite global manufacturers reflects a broader strategy to strengthen its industrial base and become more self-reliant in advanced manufacturing sector India. The initiative also aligns with the government’s focus on promoting Make in India initiative goals and reducing vulnerability to international supply disruptions.
Bid submissions are open until late May, with technical evaluations scheduled shortly afterward, further supporting the growth of India rare earth industry.
