Vedanta is planning to establish a 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) aluminium smelter in Dhenkanal, Odisha, as part of its growth plan. The announcement was made by Rajiv Kumar, chief executive officer of Vedanta’s Aluminium business, before an audience at ALUMEX India 2025, which took place in New Delhi. The project will double Vedanta’s existing 3 MTPA capacity to 6 MTPA within a few years.
Mr. Kumar claimed that the new green aluminium smelter would provide more than two lakh jobs when completed, and that a significant capital investment was needed. "Aluminium is very heavy on investment and is a capital-intensive industry...it is progressing and any facility like this will take three to four years,” he mentioned.
