In a major push to improve railway safety and modernise operations, Indian Railways has approved projects worth ₹1,364 crore. The focus of this investment is to expand the use of Kavach train protection system, along with upgrading railway signalling upgrade and communication infrastructure.
The approved projects aim to strengthen railway safety India across multiple zones. A significant part of the plan includes installing Kavach system in locomotives, laying optical fibre network railways, and replacing older systems with electronic interlocking system. These upgrades are expected to reduce human errors and improve railway operational efficiency.
One of the key highlights is the installation of Kavach Version 4.0 in 232 locomotives under Southern Railway. This upgrade will enhance train collision prevention system capabilities by automatically controlling speed and applying brakes when needed, especially on busy routes.
In Northern Railway, projects worth over ₹400 crore have been approved to improve communication systems. This includes expanding high-speed railway communication network over thousands of kilometres, which is essential for seamless Kavach integration.

The move to replace traditional signalling systems with electronic interlocking is another important step toward railway modernisation India. This technology reduces manual intervention and increases reliability, making train operations safer and more efficient.
Kavach, developed in India, is designed to act as a fail-safe system and is a key part of indigenous railway technology India. It ensures trains operate within safe limits, even in challenging conditions like poor visibility.
Overall, this investment highlights the government’s focus on Indian Railways infrastructure development and its goal of achieving safer, faster, and more reliable train services across the country.
