Hindustan Zinc has strengthened its partnership with Tata Steel to increase the use of EcoZen, a low-carbon zinc product, in steel manufacturing. The move highlights a growing effort within India’s industrial sector to adopt cleaner raw materials and reduce carbon emissions.
EcoZen is produced using renewable energy and has a carbon footprint of less than one tonne of COâ‚‚ equivalent per tonne of zinc—about 75 per cent lower than the global industry average. By using such materials in their operations and procurement, both companies aim to build more sustainable supply chains.
Zinc is widely used to galvanise steel, helping protect it from corrosion and improving durability. Hindustan Zinc said that switching to low-carbon zinc can significantly cut emissions across the value chain. According to the company, EcoZen can help avoid nearly 400 kg of COâ‚‚ emissions per tonne of steel galvanised compared to conventional zinc.

Hindustan Zinc and Tata Steel have worked together for more than two decades. The expanded collaboration under the EcoZen initiative will focus on responsible sourcing and reducing emissions across the steel value chain.
