ABB has released an enhanced version of its Millmate Thickness Gauge (MTG), designed to provide accurate thickness measurements at the final phase of aluminum hot rolling.
The newly designed MTG Box Gauge enhances the functionalities of the current MTG platform for high-temperature rolling conditions, allowing precise measurement of aluminum strip under 8 millimeters as it exits the hot mill — a stage where accuracy is crucial for quality and effectiveness. To endure the severe operating conditions of hot rolling, the system incorporates an improved IP66 protective seal that stops emulsions utilized for lubrication and cooling from accessing the sensing components.
The revamped unit features an enhanced internal airflow system that channels cool air to delicate electronics and expels warm air through the bottom. This method can reduce the temperature of the transmitting coil by as much as 40°C, enhancing durability and improving operational efficiency.

Utilizing ABB’s pulsed eddy current technology, the MTG Box Gauge removes the intricacies and safety hazards associated with X-ray measurement systems.
A major benefit of the MTG Box Gauge is its capacity to conduct highly accurate, single-side measurements without needing sensors positioned above and below the strip. This decreases installation duration, streamlines maintenance, and creates space in mills where reaching the bottom of the strip is limited.
Although traditional gauges usually require recalibration for various alloys, the MTG Box Gauge provides reliable precision for all aluminum grades. This capability, independent of the alloy, enables manufacturers to optimize setup, reduce downtime, and sustain production flow despite diverse rolling schedules.
