Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in New Delhi for a two-day state visit, setting the stage for a crucial India-Russia Annual Summit in which trade, defence cooperation and alignment of geopolitical thinking are the focal points of discussions. His visit is timely as India is redefining global relations and faces pressure from the West and is dealing with the changing equations with Washington.
Before departing for a private dinner, which is a significant indication that this meeting was indeed about politics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received Putin at Air Force Station Palam. The first two days will involve a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan, a wreath-laying at a Rajghat, a bilateral meeting at the Hyderabad house, press meetings and a business event followed by a state banquet by President Droupadi Murmu.
Putin's visit brings India's strategic sovereignty back into the spotlight. Modi must strike a delicate equilibrium while securing benefits for India's long-term security and economic goals as tariffs strain relationships between the US and India and pressure mounts from Europe over Russia's position on Ukraine. Primarily due to reduced oil sales, India's bilateral commerce with Russia has already risen to $68.72 billion.
However, the disparity significantly advantages Russia, and Modi is likely to stand for greater entry into the market for Indian products. Defence is still a top priority, and India's armed services continue to rely heavily on vital equipment like S-400 systems and Sukhoi-30 aircraft.
The summit is expected to deliver agreements in trade, defence timelines, and new areas of economic cooperation. Analysts say a modest outcome will secure oil and defence supplies, while an ambitious one could reshape regional economics and position Indian products more strongly in Russia’s post-war market. Delhi remains under tight security as both leaders move through a packed schedule aimed at strengthening one of India’s most enduring strategic partnerships.
