India is accelerating its critical mineral exploration efforts, with Union Minister Jitendra Singh announcing a stronger push to build domestic supply chains and reduce reliance on imports.
The move signals a major shift in India’s strategy to secure essential resources for clean energy and advanced technologies.
Speaking at a recent review of the National Mineral Exploration and Development Trust, Jitendra Singh emphasized the need to scale up critical mineral exploration in India while strengthening the entire value chain—from extraction to processing and final use. He highlighted that India must act quickly to meet rising demand for minerals like lithium and rare earth elements, which are key to electric vehicles, batteries, and renewable energy systems.

The government is also opening doors for private players and startups to participate in exploration activities. By improving access to funding and technology, authorities aim to speed up discoveries and make mining more efficient. States rich in mineral resources are being encouraged to develop processing infrastructure so that raw materials can be converted into high-value products within the country.
This focus on domestic value chains is part of a broader effort to boost economic security and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. Currently, India imports a large share of its critical minerals, making it vulnerable to global supply disruptions.
With global competition intensifying, India’s push for critical mineral exploration and local processing could play a key role in strengthening its position in the clean energy transition. The government believes that building a self-reliant ecosystem will not only support industrial growth but also create new opportunities in mining, technology, and manufacturing.
