The main manufacturing industries in Maharashtra are automotive and EV, pharmaceuticals and chemicals, electronics, engineering and defense, and food processing.
Export data shows the mix. In 2023-24, gems and jewelry, electronics and electrical components, engineering, chemicals and pharmaceuticals were the leading export sectors.
Automotive & EV: Pune, Chakan, Talegaon and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar form the core. Chakan hosts Bajaj Auto, Mahindra and Kawasaki. Talegaon has Hyundai and New Holland, and Ranjangaon has Tata Motors. The EV and battery ecosystem is building around this base.
Tata AutoComp runs EV component and battery-related units at Chakan and Ranjangaon. Mahindra opened a dedicated EV and battery-assembly plant at its 2.83 sq km Chakan hub in January 2025, covering roughly Rs 4,500 crore of a Rs 16,000 crore FY22–27 investment cycle.
In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, JSW Greentech commissioned a Rs 2,500 crore, 90-acre EV plant at AURIC in September 2026 to build electric trucks and buses under its new Ampstar brand, starting at 15,000 vehicles a year.
Pharmaceuticals & Chemicals: The Mumbai–Raigad–Thane belt (including Taloja and Patalganga) anchors chemicals and bulk drugs. Reliance Industries runs a large refinery off-gas cracker (ROGC) unit at Patalganga, and Lupin operates formulation plants in Nagpur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
On the pharma side, Pune is anchored by Serum Institute of India's Poonawalla Bio-Tech Park at Manjri, a Rs 4,000 crore vaccine facility - the world's largest by volume, with roughly half a billion doses of annual capacity.
Electronics & Advanced Manufacturing: Ranjangaon is the centrepiece, already home to LG Electronics' consumer-electronics plant, where the company added a Rs 200 crore side-by-side-refrigerator line in 2023 on top of an earlier Rs 900 crore expansion.
The Centre has separately approved a greenfield Electronics Manufacturing Cluster at Ranjangaon Phase III, a Rs 492.85 crore project expected to draw upwards of Rs 2,000 crore in further investment from component makers.
Maharashtra is also one of eight states sharing in the Centre's Rs 41,863 crore Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme approvals from January 2026, which include projects from Dixon Technologies, Foxconn's Yuzhan Technology India, Tata Electronics and Hindalco.
Engineering, Aerospace & Defense: Pune's precision-engineering base supplies auto, defense and aerospace, and Nagpur's MIHAN zone is the emerging aerospace and defense node.
JSW Steel is spending close to Rs 19,000–20,000 crore on a Phase III expansion of its Dolvi plant in Raigad, lifting capacity from 10 to 15 million tons by September 2027. JSW separately committed Rs 5,845 crore with Japan's JFE Steel to expand electrical-steel output at Nashik.
Food & Agro Processing: Nashik's grape and wine cluster and Nagpur's food parks show how agriculture feeds factory output.
In the 2025-26 season, Maharashtra's 210 sugar mills - 103 cooperative and 107 private - crushed about 104.5 million tons of cane, and more than 140 of them now run their own ethanol distilleries.
Riding the Centre's ethanol-blending push, according to credible source the state’s mills earned over Rs 8,250 crore from ethanol and bagasse-based power generation that season alone, turning what used to be a purely seasonal commodity business into a year-round energy and food-processing operation.
