The Uttar Pradesh government has undertaken a massive scheme for free distribution of pulses and oilseeds to nearly one million farmers during the rabi season with the objective of crop diversification and increasing farmers’ income.
The scheme intends to spread the production of nutritious and high-value crops such as lentils, gram, mustard, and other oilseeds in the agricultural districts of the state. The government is optimistic that the area under cultivation will increase, the yield will rise and the community of farmers will get good prices for their products as a result of giving free minikits of good quality seeds.
The Agriculture Department officials said the decision is in line with the state's long-term plan to become self-sufficient in edible oils and pulses and at the same time adopt sustainable agricultural practices. Farmers who qualify for the scheme can register online to get seed kits for free. The distribution will be through selected agricultural centers.
