Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened and laid the foundation stone for development projects of more than ₹4,800 crore on Saturday in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. These initiatives involve the airports, highways, ports, and railways, as well as clean energy infrastructure, aimed at improving connectivity and economic opportunities in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. PM Modi took time on Kargil Vijay Diwas to pay homage to the men in uniform for their valour and sacrifice.
While Infrastructure is an essential catalyst for growth, PM Modi inaugurated the new ₹450 crore terminal at Thoothukudi Airport which will allow the number of passengers it can handle to grow from 3 lakh to 20 lakh per year; PM Modi also laid the foundation stone for two highway projects the ₹2,350 crore four-laning of NH-36's Sethiyathope-Cholapuram section and the ₹200 crore six-laning of NH-138 Thoothukudi Port Road as soon as he opened these projects, they will fast track movement of cargo and are catalysts for the development of an industrial area.

To diversify the maritime infrastructure further, PM Modi also opened the North Cargo Berth-III at the V.O. Chidambaranar Port for a cost of ₹285 crore, which increases the port's cargo handling capacity to 6.96 MMTPA. Three railway projects, including electrification and doubling of railway track that worth ₹650 crore, were dedicated to developing passenger convenience as well as economic integration.
PM Modi per also inaugurated a ₹550 crore transmission system associated with the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant for clean energy evacuation.
He emphasized Tamil Nadu’s advancement under the Surya Ghar Muft Bijli initiative for rooftop solar adoption and green jobs. The Prime Minister mentioned the opportunities in the India-UK Free Trade Agreement to improve export markets and support local businesses. Others present included Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi, Union Ministers, and other dignitaries.
