Maruti Suzuki India Limited has made a significant leap in sustainable logistics with its Gujarat in-plant railway siding becoming the world’s first Modal Shift Transportation Project under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) program by Verra.
This recognition marks a key milestone in the company’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions by shifting vehicle dispatches from road to rail, a move that not only benefits the environment but also enhances logistics efficiency.
The project is expected to generate about 1.7 lakh carbon credits over a ten-year period, from FY 2023-24 to FY 2032-33. Emission savings have been assessed using the AM0090 methodology under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Clean Development Mechanism. After independent verification, Verra will issue carbon credits under its global certification program, making this an essential achievement in the company's long-term sustainability goals.

Maruti Suzuki’s Managing Director and CEO, Hisashi Takeuchi, emphasized that the achievement highlights the company’s focus on merging operational efficiency with environmental responsibility. "Shifting vehicle transport from road to rail has reduced fuel consumption, eased road congestion, and cut down logistics-related emissions," he said. This initiative further aligns with India’s climate goals and sustainable manufacturing practices, reinforcing Maruti Suzuki’s leadership in eco-friendly transport solutions.

Since its start in March 2023, the Gujarat railway siding has dispatched over 600,000 vehicles. The company aims to expand rail-based vehicle movement across its logistics network to further reduce its carbon footprint. The project also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on climate action, health, and economic growth, and will have a lasting positive impact on both the environment and communities.
