India’s manufacturing sector is moving into a more demanding phase. Customers across automotive, machine tools and industrial engineering increasingly expect suppliers to combine precision, quality and dependable delivery with greater efficiency and environmental responsibility. As supply chains become more competitive and sustainability becomes an important part of industrial decision-making, engineering companies are being challenged to strengthen capabilities while preparing for a changing manufacturing landscape.
For Ratan Engineering Co, this transformation aligns closely with the direction the company has taken over nearly four decades. Established in 1987, the organisation has grown from a steel casting manufacturer into a diversified engineering enterprise with capabilities in precision engineering, stamping dies, press tools and moulds, while also expanding into export markets and renewable-energy-led manufacturing.
From Foundry Roots to a Broader Engineering Enterprise
Ratan Engineering Co was founded by R. Prakash, an IIT Delhi Mechanical Engineering graduate, with a vision of building an engineering company defined by technical excellence, quality and ethical business practices. His younger brother, Naresh Garg, an Economics Honours graduate from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and a Law graduate from the University of Delhi, brought complementary strengths in commercial understanding, governance and strategic decision-making.
The partnership created a strong foundation for the company. Rather than pursuing growth through scale alone, the founders focused on manufacturing discipline, customer relationships and consistent quality. This approach helped Ratan Engineering establish credibility in demanding industrial markets.
A significant milestone came in 1995, when the company secured registration with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). The association strengthened its reputation among industrial customers and reinforced the importance of quality systems and process discipline within the organisation.
The next major turning point came in 2013, with the establishment of the company's modern manufacturing facility at Khaharani, Bhiwadi, Rajasthan. The facility provided the platform for Ratan Engineering to move beyond traditional foundry operations and develop capabilities in higher-value engineering applications.
This period also marked the growing involvement of the second generation, Vikram Garg and Vivek Garg. Their leadership has helped the company balance continuity with change. While Vikram Garg has focused on strategic growth, business development and sustainability, Vivek Garg has strengthened manufacturing operations, quality and execution. Their complementary responsibilities have enabled Ratan Engineering to pursue new opportunities without losing sight of the principles established by its founders.
Precision Engineering Backed by Customer Trust
The company's evolution has been driven by its ability to respond to increasingly sophisticated customer requirements. Following the Khaharani expansion, Ratan Engineering diversified into precision stamping dies, press tools and moulds, strengthening its position within India's automotive manufacturing ecosystem.
The company has developed relationships with leading automotive organisations, including Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and International Tractors Limited (ITL). Serving such customers requires far more than production capacity. Tooling and precision engineering demand dimensional accuracy, consistency, process control and timely delivery, making quality and operational discipline essential to long-term customer relationships.
Ratan Engineering has also expanded its presence in the machine tool segment, supplying castings and engineered components to leading manufacturers such as BFW (Bharat Fritz Werner) and Ace Micromatic Machines, among others. Machine tool applications require castings with strong dimensional stability, metallurgical integrity and machining performance.
“These relationships demonstrate the company's ability to serve different segments of the engineering value chain while maintaining consistent manufacturing standards. Our growing export presence further strengthens this positioning. International customers evaluate suppliers on quality, process consistency, technical capability and delivery reliability, making exports an important benchmark for Ratan Engineering's manufacturing capabilities”, shares Vikram Garg, CEO.
At the heart of this growth is the company's approach to quality. Rather than treating quality as an inspection performed at the end of production, Ratan Engineering has worked to embed it within manufacturing processes. Investments in inspection, process controls and production discipline have supported the company's ability to meet demanding customer expectations. This focus has allowed the organisation to build something that cannot be created through machinery alone: long-term customer trust.
Green Castings: Making Sustainability Part of Manufacturing
The most distinctive aspect of Ratan Engineering Co's recent transformation has been its approach to renewable energy. As sustainability becomes increasingly relevant to industrial customers and global supply chains, the company has chosen to integrate clean energy into its manufacturing strategy rather than treat it as a standalone environmental initiative.
The journey began in 2021, when Ratan Engineering commissioned its first 70 kW rooftop solar power plant. The project was modest in scale but important in direction, establishing renewable energy as part of the company's long-term manufacturing strategy.
The company continued building on this foundation. A further 300 kW rooftop solar installation was commissioned in 2023, followed by another 300 kW in 2024. These investments progressively increased the contribution of renewable energy to the company's operations.
The defining milestone came in 2025, when Ratan Engineering commissioned a 2.1 MW solar power plant at Bikaner, Rajasthan. The project represented a substantial expansion of the company's renewable-energy programme and reflected its confidence in integrating clean energy with industrial manufacturing.
This philosophy is expressed through the company's concept of “Green Castings.” The term represents more than the use of solar power. It reflects the company's belief that engineering excellence and environmental responsibility should increasingly operate together.
“For manufacturers, this approach has strategic relevance. Energy is a major component of industrial operations, while customers and supply chains are paying greater attention to environmental performance. By investing in renewable energy, Ratan Engineering is seeking to improve energy resilience while preparing itself for a manufacturing environment in which sustainability increasingly influences business decisions”, speaks Vivek Garg, CTO.
Its efforts have also received external recognition. In 2022– 23, the company received the Gold Certificate from the Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board for its environmental stewardship and compliance. In 2026, it achieved ZED Gold Certification under the Government of India's Zero Defect Zero Effect initiative, recognising its focus on quality, operational excellence and environmentally responsible manufacturing.
These recognitions reinforce an important aspect of Ratan Engineering's approach: sustainability is being pursued alongside manufacturing quality rather than separately from it.
Preparing for the Next Phase of Growth
Ratan Engineering Co's next chapter will be built on the capabilities it has developed across precision manufacturing, customer relationships, exports and renewable energy. The company has planned an additional 800 kW of solar capacity, which would take its total installed and planned renewable-energy capacity to approximately 3.57 MW.
The roadmap, however, extends beyond solar power. The company intends to continue strengthening automation, digitalisation and Industry 4.0-oriented practices while enhancing product development and exploring further opportunities in international markets. These priorities reflect the leadership's view that future competitiveness will depend on combining engineering expertise with technology, productivity and responsible manufacturing.
The company also continues to place importance on people and process. Advanced equipment can improve production capabilities, but sustainable growth depends equally on skilled teams, disciplined execution and a culture of continuous improvement.
This is where the transition between generations becomes particularly relevant. The founders established Ratan Engineering around integrity, engineering excellence and customer trust. The second generation is extending those values into areas such as renewable energy, advanced tooling, exports and digital manufacturing.
“The objective is not simply to become larger. It is to become more capable, resilient and relevant to the needs of tomorrow's industrial customers”, mentions Vikram Garg.
Nearly four decades after its establishment, Ratan Engineering Co stands as an example of how a family-led engineering enterprise can evolve while preserving the values that created its foundation. From steel castings to precision tooling, from domestic customers to export markets, and from conventional energy consumption to Green Castings, the company's journey has been defined by a willingness to invest ahead of change.
“As Indian manufacturing moves towards a future shaped by precision, technology and sustainability, Ratan Engineering is positioning itself for that transition with a clear philosophy: engineering excellence must create value not only for customers, but also for the future of manufacturing itself”, signs off Vivek Garg.
