As industries pursue higher productivity, tighter process controls and greater energy efficiency, industrial cooling has evolved from a utility function into a critical component of manufacturing performance. From plastics and pharmaceuticals to laser processing, electronics and precision machinery, stable temperature control directly influences equipment reliability, product quality and operational continuity.
This has increased demand for industrial chillers that can deliver precise cooling while reducing energy and maintenance requirements. The shift is also encouraging manufacturers to move beyond standardised equipment towards application-specific systems engineered around the demands of individual processes.
Building an India-Japan Cooling Engineering Platform
Positioned within this evolving landscape, GEM ORION Machinery Private Limited brings together Japanese refrigeration technology and Indian manufacturing capabilities to address demanding industrial and process-cooling requirements. Established in December 2016 as an Indo-Japanese joint venture between GEM Equipments Private Limited, India, and Orion Machinery Co., Ltd., Japan, the company commenced operations in April 2017. Its approach has been shaped by a long-standing relationship between the two organisations, combining Orion's technology expertise with GEM's engineering and manufacturing capabilities in India.
The company's portfolio has expanded from the initial GKL Series to a broader range of industrial chillers, precision inverter chillers, coolant chillers and dual-channel systems. Its solutions serve applications ranging from laser cutting and welding to EDM machining, medical equipment, plastics processing, pharmaceuticals, electronics and precision machinery. By manufacturing in India while retaining Japanese technology standards, GEM ORION has established a proposition centred on precision, reliability and application-oriented engineering.
At the helm is K. P. Manoharan, Managing Director of GEM ORION Machinery. An engineering professional and entrepreneur from Coimbatore, Manoharan holds a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Government College of Technology, Coimbatore, and an M.E. in Industrial Engineering from PSG College of Technology. His entrepreneurial journey includes work in machined components, hydraulic water-well rigs, compressed-air dryers and cooling towers. His early focus on waterless dry-cooler technology also reflects a long-standing interest in energy and resource-efficient engineering.
From Chiller Distribution to Indigenous Engineering
GEM ORION's current capabilities are rooted in a relationship that predates the joint venture.
GEM became an authorised service partner for Orion chillers in India in 2007, followed by engineering training in Japan in 2008 and the establishment of an Orion spare-parts warehouse in 2011. These milestones built technical familiarity and service capabilities before the companies formally joined hands.
The 2016 joint venture marked the next stage, with Indian manufacturing beginning in 2017 through the GKL Series. Since then, GEM ORION has progressively broadened its technology offering in response to increasingly specialised cooling requirements. The company has introduced dual-channel chillers for laser applications, coolant chillers, precision inverter chillers, inverter dual-channel chillers and specialised medical cooling systems.
This evolution reflects a deliberate shift from simply supplying cooling equipment to developing solutions around specific industrial processes. The company's systems can accommodate requirements involving DM water, pure water, water-ethylene glycol mixtures and water-soluble coolants, enabling them to support diverse process environments.
Precision, Efficiency and Application- Specific Performance
Technology remains central to GEM ORION's positioning. Its precision chiller solutions incorporate inverter-driven fan motors, stainless-steel components, high-pressure pumps and robust heat exchangers, with features such as remote operation and optional RS485 connectivity available for suitable applications. These engineering choices are designed to provide stable temperature control while supporting efficient and dependable operation.
“The breadth of applications demonstrates the company's emphasis on specialised cooling. Its solutions are used for fibre lasers, induction heating, ICP analysis equipment, milling equipment, moulding machines, MRI systems, photolithography, plasma welding, plastic moulding and printing equipment, among others.
Such applications often demand continuous operation and tight temperature control, making chiller performance directly relevant to equipment uptime and process consistency”, highlights K. P. Manoharan, Managing Director.
GEM ORION also places service alongside technology. Installation assistance and after-sales support across India complement its manufacturing capabilities, helping customers manage the operational lifecycle of their cooling systems. This combination of engineering, local production and service enables the company to respond to industrial requirements with greater application awareness rather than relying solely on standard equipment configurations. By manufacturing in India while retaining Japanese technology standards, GEM ORION has established a proposition centred on precision, reliability and application-oriented engineering
Expanding the Industrial Cooling Horizon
GEM ORION's next phase is likely to build on the same convergence of technology, localisation and application-specific engineering. Its existing presence across sectors such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, plastics, printing and packaging, electronics manufacturing, laser processing and precision machinery provides a foundation for expanding into additional applications where accurate and energy-conscious cooling is essential.
“The company is particularly positioned to pursue opportunities involving data centres and servers, advanced laser systems, medical equipment, precision manufacturing and other processes requiring reliable temperature management. Its vision of becoming a leading industrial chiller supplier is underpinned by a focus on technologically advanced, innovative and competitively priced solutions”, shares K. P. Manoharan.
As industrial processes become increasingly automated, precise and energy-conscious, cooling systems will have to evolve alongside them. GEM ORION's India- Japan engineering model gives it a platform to participate in that transition - bringing together established refrigeration technology, domestic manufacturing and application-led innovation.
Its continued focus on efficient and sustainable cooling can strengthen its role as industries seek not merely to cool equipment, but to improve the reliability, efficiency and competitiveness of the processes that depend on it.
