India’s automobile industry is going through a major change in 2026. People are shifting from traditional petrol and diesel cars to alternate options like compressed natural gas (CNG), hybrid cars and EVs. As fuel prices have increased, better technology in vehicles and increased awareness of running costs are making buyers consider other vehicles.
The significant shift occurred in August 2026 as the combined sales of CNG, hybrid and electric passenger vehicles surpassed petrol vehicles. These are estimated to have made up 41.95% of passenger vehicle retail sales for the month, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). The petrol and ethanol-fuelled cars made up 40.85%, while diesel cars made up about 17.21%.
Demand for alternative fuel vehicles indicates that people are more accepting of other technologies, although petrol cars still have a significant footprint. The change is not due to one fuel. CNG is gaining traction with those wanting to save money on their everyday driving, hybrid cars are seeing increased interest due to their higher fuel efficiency, and electric vehicles are gaining popularity as more become available.
In addition to this, car manufacturers are adapting to this shift, launching new models and increasing the selection of alternatives. Meanwhile, investments in charging stations, battery technology and fuel distribution are helping to drive this growth.
- India’s automobile market is moving beyond petrol and diesel, with CNG, hybrid and electric vehicles gaining a larger share of passenger vehicle sales in 2026.
- Alternative-fuel vehicles overtook petrol vehicles in August 2026, accounting for 41.95% of passenger vehicle retail sales, compared with 40.85% for petrol and ethanol vehicles.
