Global technology leader ZF has announced its first gearbox manufacturing order for the Indian railway sector, which represents a significant move to expand outside of its traditional automotive driveline and system technology space.
The gearboxes will be built in ZF's Coimbatore facility in Tamil Nadu, helping to solidify ZF’s localization and Make in India efforts. The new single-stage spur gear drive, designed specifically for the Vande Bharat Express - India's indigenously built semi high-speed train - reflects ZF's growing footprint within the Indian transportation ecosystem.
The gearbox was engineered to provide rapid acceleration, reliability, and efficiency for trains operating at speeds up to 170 kmph (70 km/h). The gearbox will feature coupling and reaction rod systems designed specifically with the operational needs of the Vande Bharat platform in mind.

ZF’s entry into the railway sector underscores its commitment to India’s growing rail infrastructure and aligns with its broader goal of providing efficient and safe mobility solutions rooted in global innovation and local manufacturing excellence.
