A Letter of Request (LoR) has reportedly been submitted by India to the US government, seeking to co-produce Javelin anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), according to defence sources.
According to a senior defence source cited in the report, the advanced stage of the talks is being acknowledged. It was noted by the official that operational readiness would be ensured and the dependability on foreign support would be reduced through indigenous co-production, while alignment with the government’s Make in India priorities is being maintained. “It will ensure operational readiness and reduce the dependability on foreign support. The talks are in advance stage,” the official added. Javelin is one of the most advanced third-generation ATGMs in the world.
The Javelin weapon system is jointly manufactured by US defence majors Raytheon and Lockheed Martin. A powerful advantage against armoured vehicles is offered by the missile’s portable, shoulder-fired design, coupled with precision fire-and-forget infrared seeker and top-attack warhead—particularly in rugged terrains like Ladakh and along the China and Pakistan borders.

Besides planning for long-term production, India has also pursued emergency procurement of Javelin anti-tank guided missiles to swiftly strengthen its defences, particularly in response to urgent needs along high-altitude frontiers. The Indian armed forces reportedly prefer lightweight, shoulder-fired missile system that offer high mobility and can be quickly deployed by small infantry units operating in challenging mountainous terrain. These systems provide tactical advantages in remote areas where traditional heavy weaponry is difficult to transport, ensuring rapid response capabilities in sensitive border zones.
