Chandigarh is strengthening its industrial presence with a Rs 50 crore investment by JM Frictech India Ltd. The development could support the city’s growth as a manufacturing hub in North India.
The company’s new facility will expand its manufacturing capacity, with full operations expected over the next six to eight months.
Auto component manufacturer JM Frictech India Ltd. (JMI) is setting up its fourth manufacturing facility in Chandigarh. The plant is being commissioned in phases, starting with warehousing and logistics before manufacturing activities gradually increase.
The investment is expected to bring the company closer to customers in northern India and support its expansion in the tractor, construction equipment, and other off-highway segments.
The development raises a broader question about Chandigarh’s potential as a manufacturing hub for industries supplying agricultural and construction equipment. However, the investment alone does not establish a wider industrial trend across the city.
The new facility will initially focus on warehousing and logistics. JMI plans to gradually increase manufacturing activities and make the plant fully operational over the next six to eight months.
The investment is part of the company’s strategy to expand its manufacturing footprint and strengthen customer connections in North India. The additional facility will also create capacity to support future growth across its target segments.
“The investment in Chandigarh is an important part of our expansion strategy. It will strengthen our manufacturing presence in North India and enable us to be closer to our customers while creating capacity for future growth,” said E. Madhavan, Managing Director of JMI.
Once operational, the Chandigarh plant will take JMI’s manufacturing network to four facilities. This will support its efforts to serve domestic and international original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) as the company expands its product portfolio.

Established in 2008 as a joint venture between India’s NTC Engineering and South Korea’s Jinmyung Frictech, JMI manufactures wet friction systems and hydraulic actuation components for off-highway applications.
Its product portfolio includes wet brakes, wet clutches, hydraulic actuation systems, transmission aggregates, and hydrostatic transmission solutions. The company is also working to localize advanced technologies for agricultural and off-highway applications.
JMI has helped introduce wet friction technology to India’s off-highway market, supporting the shift from traditional dry friction solutions to wet systems. The company manufactures approximately 12 million friction discs annually and supplies leading OEMs across the off-highway segment.
Its growth plans are supported by new product programs, customer additions, and capacity expansion. These efforts are aimed at meeting demand from manufacturers of tractors, construction equipment, and other off-highway vehicles.
For Chandigarh, the facility represents an additional manufacturing investment and a potential boost to its role in regional industrial supply chains. As operations expand, the plant will strengthen JMI’s presence in North India. Whether Chandigarh develops into a larger manufacturing hub will depend on broader industrial investment and the growth of its manufacturing ecosystem.
