Ashok Leyland today inaugurated its electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Lucknow, marking a significant move for India’s commercial vehicle sector and the shift toward green mobility.
The new EV manufacturing facility at Lucknow has been established at the Sarojini Nagar Extension-1 industrial area on the previous site of Scooters India, further supporting the interest of the company in extending the localized and sustainable manufacturing.
The chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, the Union Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, and the Union Minister of Heavy Industries, H.D. Kumaraswamy were also present during the inauguration.
Top management of Ashok Leyland, such as Chairman Dheeraj Hinduja and MD and CEO Shenu Agarwal were also present and this underscored the strategic significance of the plant within the long term electric mobility strategies of the company.

The facility is entirely committed to the production of electric vehicles, and in line with the overall industrial policy of the state of Uttar Pradesh to appeal to investment, provide jobs, and establish a solid manufacturing foundation. By focusing on clean transportation, the facility will empower Ashok Leyland in EVs and enhance the faster uptake of electric commercial vehicles in the country.
The state officials highlighted that investor friendly policies, the development of infrastructure and the reforms of the ease of doing business have been instrumental in attracting big manufacturing projects. In the context of the industry, the EV production facility in Lucknow will be a booster to subsequent investments into the electric mobility ecosystem of the area.
In addition to the increased production capacity, the new facility will also create employment opportunities and stimulate the development of other related industries. Analysts believe that this move is one that will strengthen the Uttar Pradesh as an upcoming electric car manufacturing hub in India.
