In a significant move to redefine India’s personal computing Jio Platform has launched a cloud-powered virtual desktop service, JioPC. It transforms any TV into a working PC.
The JioPC uses Jio’s set top box to stream a cloud desktop experience. It is designed to democratize access to computing and provides complete productivity apps and browser based tools, directly to the television.
It is presently available through a free trial and waitlist service, with users requiring a keyboard and mouse to start. Users can connect these peripheral to the Jio set top box and access the full desktop interface. The JioPC comes preinstalled with LibreOffice, but users also have to use Microsoft Office through the browser depending on the activity, such as work or study.

The service does not use costly hardware, as all data and applications are stored and run through cloud infrastructure. Currently, it does not allow for many peripherals, like printers or webcams. The opportunity is still immense as India has high TV penetration against relatively low PC adoption. Jio is trying to close this digital gap and to use the increasing demand of affordable computing to their advantage.
As Jio moves forward with upgrades and peripheral support, JioPC could be a revolutionary way to enhance digital inclusion and hybrid education in India.
