After enduring years of underinvestment, Indian Railways anticipates significant expansion during the upcoming 15–20 years. The government understands that railways should extend beyond traditional mass transit to establish multiprocessing systems that combine quality features with connectivity. Surlon Durel Springs has entered the market with a focus on contributing to new rapid rail links such as Delhi–Meerut and metro system developments, steering opportunities for smart rail technologies and green initiatives.
Established in 2009, Surlon Durel Springs has become a key supplier to Indian Railways, specializing in polymer spring assemblies and crash energy management systems. It offers customized solutions for railways, cranes, and material handling industries. Furthermore, the company is known in the market for quality-driven side buffers, soft draft gear, balance draft gear, among other components.
An All-Encompassing Solutions Deliverability
With deep expertise in elastomeric systems, the company designs and manufactures high-durability solutions for vibration control, shock absorption, and railway safety. Its in-house R&D and design team focuses on optimizing performance through material behavior and structural design analysis. It operates with a dedicated production setup, supported by advanced 3D modeling and FEA tools.
The polymer-based springs used in its draft gears and side buffers reduce jerks during train travel by managing energy dissipation more efficiently than steel. They return only about 40 percent of the energy input, resulting in smoother operation and reduced maintenance. Surlon Durel Springs' collaboration with a German partner, Durel GmbH, has enabled the development of springs with an 8–10 year operational lifespan and only periodic cleaning required every 3–5 years.
Today, Surlon Durel Springs is the only company in India to manufacture and offer Side Buffers according to UIC/EN15551 for wagons, locomotives and passenger coaches. The Side Buffers have been tested and validated in Germany according to EN15551:17.
Ensuring Utmost Quality Standards & Technology Prowess
The company follows stringent quality systems inspired by the automotive sector, which has led to improved durability and consistency in railway applications. Expert operators conduct multiple in-process tests under a well-defined quality framework, ensuring safety and reliability in every component. The company is also working to meet global manufacturing standards through continuous improvement.
For over 15 years, Surlon Durel Springs has been a tier-one supplier to Indian Railways and global OEMs, consistently delivering safety-critical components and continues to invest in testing and validating elastomeric materials for railway energy management.
Sequoia Safety Products, also a part of the group focuses on railway’s safety management and mobility solutions, offering a wide portfolio for Metro Systems right from OHE and Rolling Stock, have successfully indigenized many critical components under Make in India initiative. The products meet IEC standards, offering successful performance and saving foreign exchange backed by robust supply chain. Sequoia is also a renowned supplier for Shock Absorber and in process to develop various products for Indian Railways.
“We’re the first Indian firm to develop a high-reach pantograph in-house, previously dominated by foreign players”, stated Lav Kumar, Managing Director, Surlon Group.
Through Surlon India, it offers an extensive portfolio of Engineering Plastics and High-Performance material, offering unmatched performance and replacing metal in many industries having its presence in all sectors i.e Aerospace, defense, Medical, automobile, capital goods, etc. Its unique product range enables it to make inroad in all sectors and to the most critical applications. Furthermore, it is currently building a new Green Building facility at Jewar and is a registered member of the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).
The group is committed to building lighter, more efficient systems that reduce the carbon footprint and withstand high-speed, high-temperature environments. Sustainability initiatives such as Solar Panels, rainwater harvesting, recycling, and waste management are already in place.
