India received a huge boost in its defense game with the opening of a new BrahMos missile factory in Lucknow Uttar Pradesh. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched the Rs 300 crore plant that will turn out 80-100 high-speed cruise missiles annually. It’s big for India’s military, where tensions simmer in the area.
The BrahMos missile, a collaborative program between India’s DRDO and the Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya, is a powerhouse. It is capable of being launched from the land, from the sea, from the air, even from submarines, and flies off at nearly three times the speed of sound, with its range stretched out now to 800 km. That means it can reach key targets on a distance. The 80-acre Lucknow facility is a moment to be celebrated for India’s efforts to produce its own defense equipment—the makers of the missile now have 65% of its parts produced domestically.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was all smiles at the opening, and for good reason. The plant will create 500 jobs for engineers and technicians, plus thousands more indirect jobs for locals. “Lucknow is becoming a center for advanced defense manufacturing, helping both our national security and local economy,” he said. The state made it happen fast, building the plant in just 3.5 years with free land and plenty of support.
This factory is part of the Defence Industrial Corridor, a big plan kicked off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018. It covers six spots, Lucknow, Kanpur, Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, and Chitrakoot. Lucknow alone has pulled in 12 companies, like Aerolloy Technologies, with investments over Rs 28,000 crore. The BrahMos plant is set to draw even more business, making Uttar Pradesh a defense heavyweight.
With regional challenges in the spotlight, officials say the timing couldn’t be better. The plant will help India stay ready, and there’s talk of a faster BrahMos-II missile down the road. Plus, India’s eyeing deals to sell the missile to countries like the Philippines, South Africa, and the UAE, putting it on the global defense map.
