The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved India’s sixth semiconductor manufacturing unit, a Rs 3,706 crore joint venture between HCL Group and Taiwan’s Foxconn, to be established in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. This landmark project, under the India Semiconductor Mission, marks a significant step toward bolstering India’s position in the global high-tech supply chain.
The factory will be built near the soon-to-open Jewar airport in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) area. It’ll focus on making display driver chips—the tiny tech that powers screens in smartphones, laptops, cars, and more. The plant is set to process 20,000 wafers a month, producing 36 million chips to cover about 40% of India’s need for these parts. It’s expected to kick off production in 2027 and create 2,000 direct jobs, plus over 10,000 indirect ones, giving a huge lift to the local economy.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the big announcement, pointing out how fast India’s chip industry is growing. “Five other semiconductor units are already in advanced stages of construction, with one set to commence production later this year. This sixth unit in Jewar strengthens India’s journey toward a self-reliant semiconductor industry,” he said. The government is chipping in Rs 1,500 crore to help make it happen.
HCL, with its know-how in hardware, and Foxconn, a global pro in electronics, are joining forces for this venture. The plant will handle advanced chip packaging and testing, tackling a key weak spot in India’s tech supply chain. This comes after Foxconn’s earlier plan with Vedanta didn’t pan out in 2022, showing India’s serious about attracting big tech projects.
The Jewar factory is a perfect fit for Uttar Pradesh, which is becoming a hotspot for electronics with its business-friendly policies and great infrastructure, like the upcoming Noida International Airport and improved roads and railways. With India eyeing a 10% share of the global chip market by 2030, this project shows the country’s ready to dream big and build a stronger tech future.
