Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI), the leading shipbuilding and heavy engineering company of India, has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), South Korea, a company that is known worldwide for building complex vessels.
According to this pact, both companies will be combined to engage in shipbuilding and engineering projects, both here in India as well as abroad. The merger has the potential to encompass a wide range of commercial ships, such as oil tankers, gas carriers, container ships, highly specialized advanced ships, etc.
Partnerships can also be products or services that are co-designed to adopt environmentally friendly technology; digitized shipbuilding methods could be utilized, and new ships could be built in order to keep up with the changing industry standards.
“We are closer to the world’s elite, when we talk about the best and most technologically advanced shipbuilders, thanks to Samsung Heavy Industries as our partner,” shared Rear Admiral Vipin Kumar Saxena (Retd), CEO of SDHI. “With this cooperation, we will be working hand in glove and using the best of our skills to engineering and execution to create real moat value.”

SDHI has Indian’s biggest dry dock (662m x 65m) with a deadweight capacity of 400,000 tonnes and an annual steel fabrication capability of 144,000 tonnes. Its offshore yard is prepared for the fabrication and delivery of heavy modules for up to 10,000 tonnes.
The company, which was once Reliance Naval & Engineering, started over again as one of the key players in India’s maritime and industrial aspirations.
