Odisha’s clean energy push gets a 1,000 MW lift as NLC India Renewables and OREDA have signed a joint venture agreement to develop 1,000 MW of green energy projects across the state.
The partnership marks a major step in Odisha’s clean energy transition and is expected to strengthen the state's position in India's growing renewable energy sector. The project portfolio includes wind power, floating solar, and energy storage projects, creating a diversified clean energy ecosystem.
With this move, Odisha Bets Big on Renewables with 1,000 MW Partnership at a time when states across India are accelerating investments in sustainable power generation and grid stability solutions.
The joint venture agreement was signed between NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NLC India Limited, and the Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA) in Bhubaneswar.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Odisha Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo. The proposed joint venture company will have NIRL holding a 51 percent stake, while OREDA will hold the remaining 49 percent.
The partnership aims to develop a total of 1,000 MW of clean energy projects across Odisha, supporting both state and national renewable energy goals.
The proposed portfolio includes:
The inclusion of large-scale storage projects is expected to improve grid reliability and help manage the intermittent nature of renewable energy generation.

One of the key highlights of the venture is the strong focus on energy storage infrastructure. While solar and wind projects generate clean electricity, storage systems help ensure power availability even when weather conditions affect generation.
The planned Pumped Storage Projects and Battery Energy Storage Systems will play an important role in balancing electricity demand and supply. Industry experts consider storage technologies critical for increasing the share of renewable energy in the power mix.
The combination of wind power, floating solar, and storage assets is expected to create a more reliable and sustainable energy network for Odisha.
The new partnership aligns with Odisha’s efforts to expand its renewable energy capacity and attract investments in green infrastructure. It also supports NLC India’s broader strategy to increase its renewable energy footprint across the country.
The project is expected to contribute to:
As India continues its push toward cleaner sources of power, the NIRL-OREDA joint venture stands out as a significant development that combines generation and storage infrastructure under a single renewable energy platform.
