India has taken a bold initiative towards sustainable shipping today with the launching of its first Green Methanol Bunkering and Refuelling Facility at VOC Port, Tamil Nadu. The foundation stone of the facility was laid today by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal under the Government of India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways while entering an important milestone in India's clean energy transition.
The facility is being constructed by SOPAN with the cooperation of the VOC Port Authority (VOCPA), and is undergoing a pilot development at a full EPC scope. SOPAN, the sole EPC contractor, will construct the terminal with 750 m³ of Green Methanol storage and bunkering capacity, as well as plant infrastructure.

Shri Sonowal said, “This initiative represents a milestone in India’s green maritime journey. The launch of the nation’s first pilot-scale Green Methanol project underscores our commitment to sustainable port development and alternative fuels.”
Susanta Purohit, Chairperson of VOCPA, added, “Aligned with India’s Net Zero target for 2070, VOC Port is taking bold steps to advance its Green Port mission. Partnering with SOPAN Group allows us to set global benchmarks in sustainable port infrastructure.”
Aniruddha Kadvekar, Director, SOPAN Group, said, “By establishing India’s first dedicated Green Methanol Bunkering Hub, we aim to reduce up to 95% of CO₂ emissions from shipping operations. This project not only showcases India’s Make in India capabilities but also positions the country as a leader in the global alternative fuels market.”
This program is part of India’s Maritime Vision 2030. This program aims to reduce CO₂ emissions from vessels to support a decarbonisation strategy for ports and the decarbonisation of shipping industry. The facility should support greener maritime operations and realise India’s broader net-zero and energy transition ambitions.
