FORVIA HELLA, a worldwide automotive supplier, has commenced the production of its newest steering sensor technology for another prominent Chinese automaker. This signifies the third production initiation this year for its fully electric steer-by-wire systems. Earlier this year, the company successfully launched two comparable projects with leading manufacturers in Germany and China.
The development and production processes are overseen by FORVIA HELLA’s electronics facilities in both nations. In contrast to traditional systems, steer-by-wire technology conveys steering inputs solely through electrical signals—removing mechanical and hydraulic connections between the steering wheel and the front axle. In these systems, FORVIA HELLA’s steering sensors accurately measure both torque and angle, transmitting this information electronically.

The elimination of standard hardware such as steering columns paves the way for customizable steering behavior, which can be adjusted according to driving conditions or user preferences. It also facilitates more versatile designs for vehicle interiors and engine compartments. The advantages include increased design flexibility, cost savings through modular systems, A reduction in component variants, and improved safety in crash situations. “With these latest series launches, we’re driving the future of fully electric steering,” said Jörg Weisgerber, Managing Director Electronics at FORVIA HELLA. “The feedback from our customers—both in Germany and the rapidly expanding Chinese market, confirms our ability to deliver high-performance, large-scale production while maintaining top standards in quality and reliability.”
