In a step that marks the first in India, Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL), in collaboration with Japan-based Nissin Electric Co Ltd, has taken a successful step to commission the first micro substation, equipped with Power Voltage Transformer (PVT), in India. The development will transform the delivery of electricity in terms of affordability, security, and availability, especially in remote and population-dense cities.
The technology enables high voltage electricity on the transmission lines to be converted to low-voltage energy which can be used in homes, thus there is no need to have big transformers which occupy space. According to the statement, “Micro substation with PVT can convert high-voltage power directly from transmission lines to low voltage power, suitable for residential consumers.”
Tata Power-DDL, which caters to about 9 million consumers in North Delhi, deployed this innovation under an International Demonstration project on Energy Efficiency Technologies in Japan led by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization(NEDO) of Japan.
The project agreement was signed last year; Tata Power-DDL and Nissin Electric aimed at modernization and smart energy devices in India. “The introduction of micro substation with PVT technology is primarily aimed at low cost and reliable power supply to remote load centers with challenging terrains,” the company stated.
The advancement is also helpful in the growth of cities where extending the network is a difficult subject because of the limitation of infrastructure.
