The food-grade lime market is rooted in a traditional product, but customer expectations around hygiene, consistency, convenience and reliable packaging have changed significantly. In a category historically dominated by loose products, paan retailers and consumers increasingly look for purity, predictable taste, easy handling and dependable quality. Babu Lime Pvt. Ltd. has built its presence by identifying these everyday market challenges and converting them into practical product and process improvements.

Founded by Shri Gordhanbhai Lunagariya, Shri Naranbhai Lunagariya, Shri Parsottambhai Lunagariya and Shri Babubhai Lunagariya, Babu Lime carries forward a Business journey that began with the “Sai Babu Katha” in Surat by Shri Gordhanbhai Lunagariya in 1989. Coming from a farming family, the founders brought discipline, hard work, responsibility and a strong quality-first mindset into business.
As Katho gained acceptance, it was supplied from Surat to Rajkot, where the younger brothers were already running a successful hotel at Rajkot Marketing Yard and also selling Katho. After Shri Gordhanbhai moved to Rajkot, all four brothers became actively involved: Shri Naranbhai and Shri Parshottambhai mainly focused on manufacturing, while Shri Gordhanbhai and Shri Babubhai drove marketing and sales. This combination of production discipline and field understanding later became a major strength for the company.
From Loose Lime Problems to a Defined Product Proposition
During market visits, the founders observed a clear problem in the lime segment. Loose lime often contained impurities such as sand, gravel and mud, and paan vendors had to filter it manually before use. Inconsistent taste and lack of control in usage also affected the end-customer experience. As excess or insufficient lime could change taste and cause discomfort. Recognising this gap, the founders began manufacturing lime in 2000 under the Babu Chuno name, with a focus on good-quality, ready-to-use and consistent-taste lime.
A major milestone came with the introduction of lime sachets or parcels. Babu Parcel made lime easier to handle, store and serve, while offering customers a lime parcel from which they could create the taste they prefer, an innovative product that was first introduced by our company. It also helped retailers offer a more dependable experience.
The company also developed Light Chuno, Medium Chuno and Thick Chuno to suit different customer and regional taste preferences. Over time, this market-led approach evolved into 12 taste types and 29 packaging formats, supported by attractive, useful packaging, clear product identification, customer and retailer education, regular market visits and fast service.
Second Generation Strength and Management Continuity
As the company expanded, the second generation entered the business in sequence and began handling responsibilities according to the growing needs of the organisation. Shri Gordhanbhai's sons Prashantbhai and Nishantbhai, Shri Naranbhai's sons Manorbhai and Bhavikbhai, Shri Babubhai's son Deepbhai, and Shri Parshottambhai's son Jaysonbhai added management power, execution strength and continuity to the founders' vision.
Their involvement helped the company handle scale, systems, coordination and market execution while staying connected to the practical, market-first values on which Babu Lime was built.
Quality Engineered into the Process
For Babu Lime, quality is central because edible lime may be used in small quantities, but it directly influences taste, mouthfeel and customer satisfaction. The company follows a controlled process covering raw-material selection, manufacturing, laboratory testing, packaging and final dispatch. Incoming materials are tested against defined specifications before production approval. Products are manufactured according to established recipes and processes, followed by laboratory testing before approved batches proceed to packaging.
The company also follows food-safety-oriented practices such as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Good Hygiene Practices (GHP), along with applicable FSSAI requirements. Product variants are packed according to demand and regional preference, with clear names, weights and colour combinations so retailers and customers can identify their preferred product quickly. This process-driven approach helps Babu Lime address one of the key weaknesses of loose lime: inconsistency.
Innovation Driven by Everyday Market Needs Babu Lime's innovation starts with observation. The company has consistently studied practical difficulties faced by paan shops and consumers, from impurities and inconsistent taste to wastage, handling challenges and variations in lime usage. Babu Parcel reflects this philosophy by offering a more convenient alternative to loose lime. Automated manufacturing systems, continuous R&D, product trials, bottle packaging and paan-kit concepts further support the company's effort to improve consistency and develop new formats. For Babu Lime, quality is central because edible lime may be used in small quantities, but it directly influences taste, mouthfeel and customer satisfaction
The company's differentiation also comes from the founders' way of doing business: transparent dealings, disciplined systems, written procedures, regular customer interaction, fast service and long-term relationships. With the second generation now supporting management and execution, Babu Lime has been able to bring an organised approach to a traditionally unorganised category without losing its family-led trust and market understanding.
Growing with Quality, Trust and Responsibility
Babu Lime's market network has also enabled it to contribute beyond commercial operations. During the COVID-19 period, the company distributed more than 82 lakh N95 masks free with its products between September 2020 and March 2022, earning Golden Book recognition for the campaign. The initiative reflected the company's ability to use its reach for a broader social purpose.
The next phase of growth is centred on strengthening presence across Gujarat and expanding into other Indian markets while continuing to respond to evolving customer needs. Stronger distribution, faster service, wider availability, retailer engagement, product development and packaging innovation will remain important priorities.
The company also aims to build on its experience with e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and Flipkart while exploring suitable international opportunities where demand exists for standardised, food-grade edible lime products.
For Babu Lime, recognition is both a matter of pride and a reminder of responsibility. The company's long-term vision is not a rigid statement, but a practical philosophy: listen carefully to the market, identify real problems and solve them creatively through quality, consistency, convenience and trust. As the company looks ahead, the founders' values and the second generation's management strength provide a strong foundation for building a trusted Indian brand and making a traditional category more organised, hygienic and reliable.
