Waaree Transpower, a subsidiary of the Waaree Group, has secured a transformer supply order valued at ₹100 crore for utility-scale solar power projects in India. The contract involves the supply of inverter duty transformers with an aggregate capacity of 1.27 gigawatts (GW), reinforcing the company’s entry into the power equipment segment.
The order has been awarded by a leading solar engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company and was secured within a month of Waaree Transpower commencing operations. The development signals strong demand for domestically manufactured grid infrastructure as India continues to expand its renewable energy capacity.
The transformers to be supplied are inverter duty transformers (IDTs), designed to manage high-frequency switching, voltage fluctuations, and harmonics generated in large solar installations. These transformers play a critical role in ensuring efficient power evacuation from solar plants to the grid. The equipment will be deployed across multiple solar projects in different regions of the country, although the company has not disclosed project locations or delivery timelines.
Waaree Transpower was formed following the acquisition of a controlling stake in Kotsons Private Limited by Waaree Energies in October for ₹192 crore. Kotsons, a long-standing transformer manufacturer, was subsequently rebranded as Waaree Transpower. The acquisition was aimed at strengthening Waaree’s backward integration in the renewable energy value chain, particularly in power evacuation and grid connectivity equipment.
Industry participants view the order as an early validation of Waaree Transpower’s manufacturing capabilities and market positioning. As solar project sizes increase and grid integration requirements become more stringent, demand for specialised transformers is expected to rise.
India has set ambitious renewable energy targets, including a goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Meeting these targets will require large-scale deployment of reliable electrical infrastructure alongside generation assets. Orders such as this highlight the growing role of domestic manufacturers in supporting utility-scale renewable projects and reducing dependence on imports.
