India just recorded a record-high output value of Rs 1,50,590 crore in 2024–2025, marking a breakthrough in its defense manufacturing capabilities. This is an almost 90% increase since 2019–20 and an 18% increase over the Rs 1.27 lakh crore from the previous year.
The Department of Defence Production and industry players were commended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for this historic accomplishment. He emphasized that the growth indicates a growing local defense industrial base, reflecting India's shift from a defense economy that relies heavily on imports to one that is self-sufficient and export-oriented. "Defence Sovereignty means that until a country is capable and self-reliant in its defence needs, its independence cannot be considered complete. If we buy weapons and other defence equipment from abroad, we are outsourcing our security and leaving it at the mercy of someone else. Our government thought over it seriously and took a decisive step to achieve self-reliance. The expanding defence industrial ecosystem is providing an unprecedented strength to India," Singh said.

This ideology, which has its roots in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's concept of "Defence Sovereignty," has propelled an effort to establish a strong domestic defense industry base for the past ten years. Self-reliance is the cornerstone of national power, dignity, and the path to a developed India by 2047, according to Prime Minister Modi, who spoke to the country on the 79th Independence Day. He also said that strategic autonomy and indigenous capabilities are essential to confronting threats decisively. “Indigenous capabilities, including Made-in-India weapons, enable India to act decisively and independently, proving that national security cannot rely on foreign dependence,” PM Modi said.
