A key player in India's push for semiconductor self-reliance is being positioned by MiPhi Semiconductors, a strategic joint venture between Micromax Informatics and Taiwan's Phison Electronics, through a focus on AI-driven NAND storage solutions and intelligent computing infrastructure that are both designed and made in India.
Launched formally in December 2024, R & D and chip design are carried out by MiPhi from its Bengaluru facility, and manufacturing of both consumer and enterprise SSDs is partnered with Bhagwati Products (BPL).
The firm is also developing on complicated technologies like liquid cooling and high-performance edge computing (HPC) as part of its long-term roadmap which can also support future advanced server manufacturing capabilities, as stated by Rahul Sharma, Co-founder of Micromax, BPL and Miphi
"MiPhi was born out of the need to bring Grade A AI-enabled memory solutions to India, which are designed and manufactured in India," Sharma said. "We are probably the only company in India right now that is designing and manufacturing enterprise SSDS in India."It is a welcoming initiative for self-reliant and business environment.
This design-first strategy aligns with India's emerging production-linked incentive (PLI) mechanism, especially the new 30,000 cr component PLI announced in March 2025, which encourages companies to develop their IT components locally.

According to Sharma, the scheme will be participated in by BPL, and it is expected that specific components will be announced by it soon. “This is a brilliant move by the government," Sharma said. “We’re moving from assembly to SMT to components and now to full design. MiPhi is already doing the firmware and controller design here, and we are manufacturing it here too"
