Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin launched a pre-covered glass production plant established by Bharat Innovative Glass Technologies Private Ltd, collaboration between US-based Corning International Corporation and Indian telecom giant Optiemus Infracom, in Kanchipuram district.
The plant, designed to produce Corning's unique Gorilla glass covers, has been established with an investment of ₹1,003 crore. Initially, it is anticipated that 840 jobs will be created, with an additional 500 jobs expected by the end of next year. In its initial phase of production, it will have a capacity for 30 million cover glass items.
“Corning, famous worldwide for its Gorilla Glass and listed among the esteemed Fortune 500 companies, has decided to invest ₹1,003 crore in Tamil Nadu, generating around 840 high-quality job opportunities for our youth.” "This is a source of great pride and fulfillment for our State," CM Stalin remarked during the facility's inauguration.

In January 2024, Corning and Optiemus Infracom entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Tamil Nadu to set up the cover glass facility. The cornerstone for the building was placed in June of the previous year. Stalin remarked that Tamil Nadu has experienced significant growth in electronics over the last four years, achieving a nine-fold increase amounting to $14.6 billion.
“India ranks among the fastest expanding smartphone markets globally, and this facility will enable us to deliver the durability, reliability, and innovation associated with Gorilla Glass to a broader consumer base in this country,” stated Andrew Beck, Vice President and General Manager Gorilla Glass at Corning.
