By 2030, Andhra Pradesh hopes to produce one million metric tons (MMT) of green hydrogen yearly, a goal that will necessitate substantial infrastructural development and investment. During an occasion in Amaravati, Pemmasani Chandra Shekhar, the Union Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, expressed this aim and urged private companies to benefit from the state's investor-friendly policies. This objective is consistent with the larger National Green Hydrogen Mission, which was adopted by the Union Cabinet in January 2023 and sets a national goal of producing 5 million metric tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030. A total of ₹19,744 crore has been allocated to the mission to enable this transition to renewable energy.
“Andhra Pradesh is positioning itself as a central hub for India’s green hydrogen sector, aiming to contribute 20% of the country’s total production target,” said Mr Shekhar. One of the key developments includes NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) planning a large-scale green hydrogen project at Pudimadaka in Visakhapatnam. This facility is expected to produce 1,500 tonnes of green hydrogen per day, along with 7,500 tonnes per day of derivatives such as green ammonia, methanol, and sustainable aviation fuel.

It is anticipated that ₹1.85 lakh crore will be invested in the state's green hydrogen ecosystem overall. Hero Future Energies, another significant business, is looking into plans to build a green hydrogen facility in Tirupati. The minister pointed out that Andhra Pradesh's vast port network strengthens its standing as a clean energy destination that is ready for export, indicating to international investors both scalability and profitability. Despite the significant development potential, Mr. Shekhar pointed out a number of issues that must be resolved if the green hydrogen industry is to expand in a sustainable manner.
