Today, as the world moves toward green living and environmental sustainability, the industrial and textile sectors are making significant progress. Notably, hemp-based products are emerging as a powerful force within the broader textile industry due to their sustainability, versatility, and potential health benefits.
Hemp is a sustainable crop that requires less water and fewer pesticides than many others, making it an eco-friendly choice and a reliable base for sustainable textiles. Its stem fibers are strong and durable, with applications in textiles, paper, and even building materials. According to Credence Research, the India Industrial Hemp Market was valued at $229.93 million in 2024 and is projected to reach $1,602.62 million by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 24.1 percent.
The Innovative Journey
Among the startups contributing to this growth, The Label Gaia stands out as a leading sustainable fashion brand in India, known for its classic hemp clothing and accessories. Launched during the global lockdown in 2020 by interior designer Gurpreet Kaur, the brand was born out of her passion for sustainable living. Inspired by the clarity of Mumbai’s skies and the stillness of the city, she envisioned a brand that would serve as a tribute to Mother Earth, designing fashion rooted in ecological mindfulness.
At a time when the market offered only bamboo, wood, or cork as sustainable options for accessories, there was a lack of alternatives suitable for the corporate sector. Motivated by this gap, The Label Gaia spent nearly two years researching hemp, training its team, and developing a product line that aligned with its eco-conscious vision. Officially launched in 2023, the brand now has a digital presence and serves numerous corporate clients focused on carbon neutrality and eco-friendly initiatives.
The Navigational Marks
With younger generations becoming more eco-aware, demand for affordable, sustainable clothing in India is on the rise. While the sustainable fashion market is growing at 20–25 percent annually, it remains in an early stage. Moreover, misconceptions about hemp persist.
Gurpreet explains, “The biggest challenge with hemp fabric is that many people associate it with cannabis. It's important to clarify that hemp clothing is made from the stem fibres and contains no THC, the compound that causes psychoactive effects. THC comes from the buds, while hemp fabric is entirely made with fibres from the stem of the plant”.
Comprehensive Offerings & Craftsmanship
The Label Gaia focuses on fabric-related products such as apparel and office essentials, crafted predominantly from organic hemp fabric. Their product range includes hemp shirts for men, office-wear dresses for women, laptop sleeves, cardholders, hemp wallets, diaries, purses, passport holders, luggage tags, and more. It’s one of the few Indian brands to offer a wide range of sustainable laptop bags and eco-friendly office accessories.
Despite the tech-driven era, The Label Gaia champions artisan craftsmanship. Its products are handmade, and the company invests in training artisans for over a year, helping them transition into mainstream roles and contribute meaningfully to sustainable production. While tech supports their backend operations, such as the website that allows customers to purchase products worldwide, the true essence of the brand lies in the hands of its dedicated artisans.
Focus on Consumer Engagement
Sustainable fashion to The Label Gaia means designing clothing that lasts. Hemp is one of the strongest natural fibers and gets softer and stronger with each wash, a unique trait that they highlight when marketing items like hemp dresses, hemp tops for women, and men’s hemp casual shirts. Moreover, all dyes used are Azo-free. To maintain quality, the brand has built long-term relationships with trusted raw material vendors and eliminated middlemen. Our trained in-house team handles production to ensure high-quality standards are met.
The brand experiments with fabric blends, such as hemp and cotton, hemp and bamboo, to balance sustainability with cost-efficiency. For accessories, they are exploring alternatives to polyurethane (PU), such as vegan leather, to further reduce reliance on non-eco-friendly materials. Gurpreet adds, “Our goal is to minimise the use of synthetic materials by using alternatives that are equally efficient yet planet-friendly”.
Specializing in the hemp, bamboo and cotton fabrics, The Label Gaia makes over 100 designs in apparels and work essentials
Future Roadmap
Although other companies use similar fabrics, The Label Gaia differentiates itself in the accessories market, especially with its sustainable tote bags, hemp duffle bags, and eco-friendly laptop bags in India. Significant investment in R&D has allowed the brand to create a wider, more innovative range than many competitors.
Looking ahead, the brand plans to deepen its presence in the corporate gifting and office accessories market. From stationery to organic laptop sleeves, the brand aims to design daily-use essentials that help reduce our dependency on synthetic materials. As demand for eco-friendly clothing in India and beyond grows, The Label Gaia is committed to staying at the forefront of the natural fibre clothing movement, proving that style, sustainability, and purpose can go hand in hand.
